What is AIT?

Artificially inflated traffic (AIT) or SMS pumping, is a fraud involving attackers creating fake SMS traffic through a business’ app, leading to the sending of one-time PINs (OTPs) or app download links to fake numbers.

How does it work?

Fraudsters employ bots to generate and send fake OTP requests to businesses by inputting fake phone numbers into online forms. Although it appears as genuine SMS OTP requests, a significant portion of this traffic is illegitimate. This results in paying for SMS messages sent to fake numbers with no actual benefits. Detecting SMS pumping is challenging, leading many businesses to unknowingly allocate a significant portion of their budget to fraudulent traffic.

How does it affect companies?

In the past year, over 5% of A2P SMS traffic was fraudulent, totaling approximately 20 billion fake SMS messages. Businesses incurred a cost of over $1.2 billion for these deceptive messages.

How do they do it?

SMS pumping commonly occurs in situations such as web forms and smartphone apps that trigger A2P SMS. Examples include SMS sign-up, signing up via SMS with 2FA, changing MSISDN for 2FA, and sending SMS with an app store URL or link to a mobile phone.

How to detect AIT?

Location of the numbers asking for OTPs

You are aware of your customers' usual locations. If you observe OTP requests originating from regions or countries not typically associated with your regular traffic patterns, it could indicate an attempt at SMS pumping fraud by a potential fraudster.

Peaks of requests

Have you observed occasional surges in OTP requests within a short timeframe? Such instances might indicate a potential fraudster attempting to inundate you with bogus OTP requests, artificially inflating your traffic.

Phone number patterns

If you observe a sequence of OTP requests originating from phone numbers that share sequential similarities, it's a clear indicator that someone is employing SMS traffic pumping to deceive your business. The likelihood of multiple individuals with nearly identical phone numbers simultaneously sending OTP requests is extremely low.

Drop in conversion rates

You may have observed that your OTP conversion rates are lower than anticipated.
